Women In Agriculture

Women In Agriculture

People still frequently assume that women play more of a support role in farming, taking care of the homestead and the administration versus the direct contact with the agricultural work itself. This can’t be farther from the truth. Women farmers in OH and cattle ranchers in the West abound by the thousands, working farms in PA and Illinois and raising cattle in every state and every farming community of the U.S. today. The Miss Agriculture program promotes women’s role in farming with an expansive program of marketing the value of agriculture to all communities and levels, as well as pointing out how instrumental women are to agriculture in general. While the Miss Agriculture program is, fundamentally, a pageant competition, the channel it creates for agriculture promotion and advocacy is a big one. It can reach every aspect of a community or region because the pageant model has already been well ingrained in American society. It also allows women a great way to explain how involved they are with farming and agricultural work versus just homestead support.
